Superspeed. If she had her way, that's what Skyler Samuels would swipe from her Nine Lives of Chloe King character, an average teen who suddenly develops a slew of heightened abilities. "Think of how much more you could do in a day if you were Chloe," she says, laughing. But the actress—who, before landing the titular role on the new ABC Family series, had parts on the short-lived The Gates and Disney and Nickelodeon hits—seems to already be capable of getting plenty done. When she's not filming, the seventeen-year-old is attending high school full-time in Los Angeles ("I'm a big nerd, so I enjoy school a lot"), taking pictures, or training (doing sprint drills, Pilates classes, and boxing sessions) to prep for Nine Lives' intense battle sequences. "I had no background in fighting—or anything athletic, for that matter," Skyler says, "and for every episode, it's like we're compacting an entire action movie into an hour." Though the series may veer heavily into the otherworldly realm—Chloe discovers she is part of an ancient race that is being hunted by assassins, and thanks to her ability to withstand vicious attacks (like, say, being tossed off the side of a building), she may be the world's only hope for survival—it remains relatable. "When I first read the script, I heard my own voice," Skyler explains. "Chloe and I are the same age, and we're both kind of oddballs with crazy best friends. But the thing I admire about her is she's so adventurous and willing to take a risk. I'm totally cautious, whereas she's like, 'All right, I'll chase you on the edge of a roof, why not?' The chick is fearless, and I love it!"
